Day 30 (3/23)

Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 5:4-5
Written by Bo Blumenshine

Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten sets of clothing.

I remember the caking dust gathering on my clothes faster than the Arizona sun could dry away my sweat. Another blessed day baking in the sun, leaving my soul to wander freely while my feet remained planted in the dirt and my hands soaked the ground with a firehouse.

At that point, my time in the desert had uncovered no treasures of any worth to my heart or head. My greatest gains were a strategic golden tan, in the farmer fashion, and gratitude for muscle-memory that reduced the drudgery of my daily tasks.

Tim ran the backhoe, expertly backfilling our trench and I surveyed the beige mound with a modicum of attention. In that ordinary moment God did something extraordinary, he spoke to my heart. An almost inexplicable experience. His voice was not Morgan Freeman’s but his message for me was clear. My road through Arizona had felt like a long detour in my life and now I felt as though God was opening a new path for me.

Naaman was open to listening to the advice of a Jewish servant girl and it was a life changing moment. How might we better prepare ourselves for God’s guidance when he reaches out to us?
