Day 9

Scripture Reading: Matthew 9:27-34
Written by Maya Grocholski

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”

28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

“Yes, Lord,” they replied.

29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”; 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.

32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”

34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”

Do you believe that God can do what you need him to in your life? Sometimes we believe that maybe if we prayed a little harder or were more involved in what we think God wants us to do, our requests would be answered. This mindset focused solely on works is what Jesus preaches against in Matthew 9:27-34. When two blind men come to Jesus begging him to heal them, Jesus does not ask them how many times they pray each day or if how much they’ve given in offerings that month. He simply asks them, “Do you believe I can do this?” After he heals them, he makes sure that they know it was simply their faith that saved them.

It is easy to be discouraged when we see so many people we think are doing better than us! I know from personal experience that it can become easy to compare ourselves to others when we feel like we are lacking in any aspect of our lives. Take comfort in the fact that our faith in God will always be enough – we don’t have to try to be perfect to be accepted by him!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for always showing up in my life! Thank you for reassuring me that I do not need to do anything to be enough for you – I am your chosen one and I am loved. Please remind me to place my trust in you and believe that my faith is all I need. Amen.
